LEATHER CARE GUIDE

With a little care and maintenance, your P Johnson garments should live a long life. Our premium leather collection is ethically sourced and created in India using light and delicate lamb leathers and suedes. These luxury materials have an incredibly soft and natural feel and will require attention and careful handling to ensure longevity.
Ageing is a natural process of leather and pieces are intended to develop a beautiful patina and texture over time. The vegetable tanning process requires less chemical intervention, preserving the natural grain of the leather. Variations in tone, as well as small scratches and imperfections are characteristics of this technique. Genuine leather varies in shade and texture across the hide, giving each garment a unique finish and requiring specific care.
We recommend speaking to a leather expert for advice on your individual garments, before attempting any care or cleaning.
Lambskin leathers are softer and more delicate than cowhide and require gentle handling. Suede pieces are highly absorbent and sensitive to colour transfer, especially in humid conditions. Special care, therefore, needs to be taken to ensure consistent ageing and an even colour.
Whilst wearing your garments be sure to avoid:
- Abrasive surfaces, sharp objects or jewellery that could damage the leather.
- Contact with any chemicals such as fragrance and personal care products.
- Long exposure to UV-light or contact with water and high humidity.
Should your garment come into contact with water or form water spots in a humid environment use a neutral coloured lint free cloth to blot off the water.
Speak to an expert and carefully check any leather conditioners or suede protectors before use, always test any products on a discreet area first.
Should your garment require cleaning we recommend professional leather dry cleaning only. Please choose your dry cleaner carefully and ask if they are licensed to use chemical white spirits, green earth or hydro-carbon techniques.
We do not recommend spot cleaning but if necessary test on a discreet area first.
Do not wash, tumble dry, iron or regular dry clean leather.
Where possible, always attempt to hang your jacket on a wide hanger to retain the shoulder form. If there isn’t a hanger available, using the loop in the collar is the next best thing. We suggest hanging shorts using the provided hanging loops or laying flat. We suggest laying skirts flat or using a clip hanger if necessary, ensure to place thick padding between the clip and leather to avoid indentation. Do not store leather pieces folded for long periods of time to prevent creasing and fold marks.
Avoid leaving your garments in plastic covers or in the sun for extended periods of time. Store garments in a breathable garment cover in a cool, dry place, consider using a dehumidifier if necessary. Air out garments regularly and check for any unwanted creasing or indentation of the leather if storing for an extended period.
