None of us are perfect.
There are dupioni, then there are dupioni. But what is dupioni? It is an old Chinese speciality also known as ‘Shantung’, a pure silk fabric made in a crisp plain weave. The weft yarns (the across ways ones) have been formed from doubled cocoons (hence dupioni). This happens when two silk worms spin their cocoons close enough together to merge somewhat, so that when the filaments are drawn off in the yarn spinning process they tangle unevenly leaving little ‘slubs’ in the yarn. The result is a beautifully engrained natural imperfection with a tactile and antique-like surface.
Our dupioni is a looser network open-weave type, creating a more dynamic drape and great ventilation. As a result we can employ the fabric across many types of garment. It is simply glorious to wear and has become a P Johnson staple. It is strangely versatile for silk, particularly elevated when needed and yet necessarily routine at the same time.
In this release we reiterate some favourites in the Kahlo skirt, the boat neck top, the bodice top and the classic shirt. New inclusions are the Maria range consisting of an elegant straight fit short, a louche keyhole back dress with hand pockets, exquisite hand-embroidered details and rouleau ties with custom brass details and finally a tunic-necked blouse in the same conception. All garments are slowly crafted and deftly express the dupioni’s character - lively, fresh, organic and like all of us, just a bit slubby.
