THE BEST PIZZA IN MELBOURNE
Words: T.B.Riley
June 2019
Whether you’re into Neapolitan or Roman style pizza, Melbourne’s got you covered. Delizioso.
Eat’aliano by Pino
120 High St, Windsor
Eat’aliano by Pino is our favourite spot for pizza, hands down. Stretchy, moist, crispy and smoky - perfect. It rivals the pizza we’ve had in Italy, and we don’t say that lightly; it’s truly like da Michele in Napoli. This restaurant is actually on our street - just a few metres away from our Windsor showroom. It’s no-frills, just genuine pizza and good people. Pino is not only a VPN accredited pizzaiolo, but more importantly has great hair (which we’ll note is hygienically restrained while cheffing, but if you get there early you might see it out in all it’s glory).
Italian Artisans
135 Victoria Ave, Albert Park
This passion project of D.O.C’s former owner serves great, well balanced, artisanal and simple pizza. It has a range of unreal artisanal (not craft) Italian beers on offer, and authentic, high quality and good value wines. Energetic staff make the whole experience great.
SPQR
26 Liverpool St, Melbourne
A great option if you’re into Roman style pizza. It’s fast and fun - with the option to order by the slice as you would in Rome. The pizzas are made with a sourdough base that’s fermented overnight and are cooked at the standard blistering 400 degrees, in SPQR’s custom made wood fired oven.
400 Gradi
99 Lygon Street, Brunswick East
400 Gradi is an institution, and for good reason. The pizza is everything you’d expect from the Australasian principal of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana; soft, slightly charred, chewy and strongly flavoured.
D.O.C
295 Drummond St, Carlton
This lively restaurant on the corner of Drummond and Faraday Street may be an obvious choice, but it’s hard to go past their delicious, simple pizza and buzzing bustle. D.O.C uses beautiful imported ingredients from Italy that are explained in detail on the back of your menu, and have a great selection of wines to match.
That’s amore!
