Le Sirenuse Sculptures by Jake Clark

To celebrate our long distance relationship with Le Sirenuse Positano, I asked sculptor Jake Clark to craft a few artworks in his signature jovial style. I don't smoke, but I like ashtrays, and I like Jake. (These artworks are not for sale).

Our obsession with brand and institution is parodied with naive purity on ceramic urns, ashtrays, pots and other sculptures. Jake fires our instinctive reaction to popular signage, branding, type and graphics in loosely hewn forms, devolving their sophistication. Iconography is an easy label to adopt here, but his visual fodder extends to the local supermarket, restaurant menu and other less-than-popular visuals too. Jake, a studied horticulturist, also includes his affection for plants and foliage. The result is an awkward low-fidelity attack on the senses, teasing with nostalgia then violating it in form.

Jake was obsessed with drawing from a young age and deeply affected by the street art of Keith Haring. Add to this, his grandparent's home was littered with pots and sculptures which has obviously impressed in his memories and feelings. It appears the self-reflective impulse of public art and its crossover with our passive absorption of public commercial signage make for a heady mix of sentiment and aesthetic energy.

Jakes is represented by Kantor Gallery in LA, who notably represent blue chip artists of similar ilk such as Basquiat, Haring and Warhol.
